The Importance of Strength Training

Strength training is defined as “the performance of physical exercises that are designed to improve strength and endurance. It is often associated with the lifting of weights. It can also incorporate a variety of training techniques such as bodyweight exercises, isometrics, and plyometrics,” (FitnessHealth101)

The benefits of strength training as it pertains to one’s overall health are abundant. It not only helps with muscular hypertrophy, also known as muscle growth, and endurance but also helps lower one’s risk for chronic diseases, improves flexibility and bone health and boosts confidence among many other things (Healthline). Examples of strength training include lifting weights, working with resistance bands, compound joint exercises, like squats, which requires the movement of two or more joints for a single exercise, yoga, Pilates and aerobic exercises like cycling and swimming, which increase one’s heart rate and require more oxygen.

Niche Pilates Online recommends focusing on Strength Training. Above is three day plan for anyone who is interested in using our Reformer or Mat classes to focus on Strength Training throughout the week. Next week NPO launches the 3 days a week workout plans for members. Don’t miss out on having your Mat or Reformer workouts planned for you!

Whether it be lifting weights or taking a new class with Niche Pilates Online, strength training should be done a minimum of two non-consecutive days a week for optimal results. Like most workout regimens, the intensity of strength training workouts varies from beginner to advanced. Those who are inexperienced with strength training should first consult with a trusted physician, and understand the benefits and risks of starting a new workout routine. Then, over time and with consistency, athletes will notice the positive impact their workouts have on their body and mind and see an increase in their endurance and strength.

In conclusion, any exercise that adds resistance to the muscle, or muscle groups, is considered strength training. The type of strength training, number of exercises, and duration of workouts may vary depending the workout routine as well as the athlete, but the benefits of strength training are plentiful and those interested in total body health should consider incorporating strength training into their workout regimen.
